Free Income Tax Preparation With CAP

Madison County, NY—Community Action Partnership (CAP) for Madison County, in partnership with the Department of Social Services and Colgate University, will offer the Voluntary Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program to Madison County residents from January 23rd through April 15th 2010.

VITA provides free tax return assistance and electronic filing to individuals and families qualifying for Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), a federal refund available to low-income individuals and families.

“Using the free tax preparation services and electronic filing offered by VITA puts the refund dollars into the hands of recipients within 2 weeks without the need to pay a commercial preparer,” says Kimberly Lorraine, Family and Youth Division Manager at CAP.

Trained volunteers will help participants determine their eligibility and apply for additional tax credits.  Most participants receive their refund in two weeks.  VITA assistance will not be available for complicated farm returns, owners of rental properties, or self-employed individuals.

Daytime, evening and Saturday appointments are available by scheduled appointment only.  For more information or to schedule an appointment in Wampsville, Morrisville or Hamilton, call Community Action Partnership between 8:30am and 4:30pm at (315) 684-3144 or 1-800-721-2271.

If you are over 60 years of age, you are eligible for free tax return preparation regardless of income. Call RSVP at 684-3001, ext. 103 for an appointment.

Community Action Partnership for Madison County, one of more than 1,100 Community Action agencies throughout the U.S., has three accessible offices throughout Madison County. CAP is an anti-poverty agency that improves the well-being and safety of children, families and our community through a variety of programs and services. Last year CAP served approximately 5,000 individuals, nearly one in fourteen Madison County residents.  For more information, visit our website at www.capmadco.org.
